Not much news to report really as we haven't been out to any shows for several months as Tinker is out of coat. I recently received my results from the London Cocker Spaniel Clubs Hands on Assessment and was pleased to hear that I had passed.

Last weekend snow arrived in Norfolk and here are a few photos taken when we went outside for game....

We received this photo today from Glynn & Cillia of their young black dog Louie (Tinker's litter brother). They have all just returned from a lovely 6 weeks in France. Glynn & Cilla say 'Louie keeps us on our toes and gives us plenty of fun, enjoyment and affection. He's a real treasure.' Were glad to hear the little man is doing well & many thanks for keeping in touch.

More learning today! I attended the Cocker Spaniel Clubs Breed Specific Seminar in Malvern. The morning session included a confirmation and movement seminar hosted by KC trainer Ron James, followed by a talk on the breed standard by breed specialist Penny Lester (Quettadene). After a lovely lunch the afternoon flew by with a Hands on Judging Assessment. Many thanks to the committee for a lovely well organized day. Pleased to receive a certificate advising that I have passed the hands on assessment.

I attended a breed seminar today organised by The Home Counties American Cocker Club with speakers Frank Kane, Mike Gadsby & Penny Ironmonger. It was a really enjoyable day and well worth making the trip down to Surrey to gain more knowledge and learn more about the breed. Really pleased to hear that I achieved a Credit for passing the written examination and hands on assessment.

Today I went to the All Breed Educational Day in Surrey organised by the Southern English Springer Spaniel Society in aid of the Cambridge University research project into Canine Hepatitis.

It was a really good day and despite going on my own and not knowing anybody there, in true dog folk style I soon got chatting to lots of different friendly people and we spent the day talking about our favorite subject - Dogs! The day started with a talk by Carole Coode (Warringah) about whelping and the lactating bitch, rearing a litter and choosing a puppy for the ring.Followed by a presentation by Gareth Lawler ( Roqfolly) about breed development whys and wherefores, type & anatomy explained and Judge and be Judged. After a lovely lunch the day ended with a inspiring talk and demonstration by Peter Upton (Tragus) on ring problems and handling technigues.

It was a long tiring day but well worth it, many thanks to the SESS Society for organising the event and to the speakers for giving up their time and for passing on their knowledge and experience.

This morning I had my first judging appointment for Southend-on Sea & District Canine Society judging American Cocker Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels. I had a good entry and really enjoyed it, thank you to those that gave me the opportunity of examining your dogs.

We finished the day off by attending a Sheepdog Training evening. The evening was hosted by Sarah Jenkins a very knowledgeable woman who has twice been a member of the International Trials and it was wonderful to see her work the dogs. She also uses her techniques on companion dogs and rehabilitates dogs who have developed behavioural problems. She brought along one dog who had severe problems and was destined to be put to sleep, she had completely turned him around, into a happy well mannered dog - it just goes to show what can be done! The relationship that she has with her dogs is wonderful and it was a real treat to listen to her talk - We could have sat there for hours!

Not news really but felt I needed to vent my frustrations! This is due to the fact that our kennel has been banned from quite a popular pedigree dog breeders website. I won't type the name (as much as I would love to!)...Apparently all because we registered our address incorrectly! This site has been quite ridiculous and quite rude to me. What really goads me is not that they won't advertise our kennel, to be honest I'm not really that bothered but that this website has banned us for registering our address incorrectly but is quite happy to advertise some commercial breeders/back yard breeders and the like, that breed numerous litters with little or no regard to the temperament, health or type of cockers they are producing.Sorry for ranting but when I feel an injustice has been done to me I cannot help it! You do wonder sometimes why you bother. We try to do everything right and by the book, testing all of our cockers using every test available and trying to produce good quality dogs with excellent temperaments. It doesn't seem fair... So a warning to all prospective puppy owners - do not assume that because you find a breeders details on a seemingly reputable site that all the breeders advertised are reputable! You must do the home work yourself. Most reputable breeders:--Have a serious interest in the breed and will participate in disciplines such as showing, working or obedience etc Also will be members of the Cocker Spaniel Club and/or a regional club. -Will ask you lots of questions and ensure puppies go to suitable homes. Will be happy to answer all of your questions and concerns. - Will discuss and offer advice on all aspects of caring for a cocker spaniel including feeding, grooming, health care etc-Will offer you life long support and be prepared to take the puppy/dog back for re-homing if it ever becomes necessary.-Health test their dogs and show you/provide copies of health certificates. All of the available health tests for cocker spaniels are as follows:- Hip Scoring, KC/BVA eye testing plus the additional test for Glaucoma, Optigen testing for PRA and FN testing. Remember health testing costs an awful lot of money so those that are in it to make money and not for the benefit of the breed will cut corners and probably not make use of health tests. -You should see the mother of the puppies and if possible the father- You should be provided as a minimum with the KC paperwork, a copy of the pedigree, worming certificate and a diet sheet. Some breeders will also include insurance, vaccinations, micro-chipping, copies of health certificates, details of the vet who has health checked the puppy, and a Sales Contract. Some breeders will endorse their puppies pedigrees so that they cannot be bred from without permission.- Be wary of breeders specializing in unusual colours. Most give little regard to anything else other than the colour. -You should not be able to collect your puppy until it is 8 weeks old - Lastly go with your instincts if something doesn't seem right question it and/or walk away. Your puppy will be with you for long time and you are making a big investment so make sure you choose wisely.Lastly a couple of good sites that will help you along the way...

Apologise to those of you that visit our website regulary, for not updating it recentley but it has been hectic lately to say the least! We have managed to attend a few shows notably we went to the London Cocker Spaniel Clubs Open Show in February and Tarka was placed 5th in a strong minor puppy class. Not to be out done by her litter brother Tinker won Best puppy in Match at our local ringcraft and will go forward to the final at the end of the year. Crufts is fast approaching and although Ginny has qualified for life to compete we will not be attending this year, we had hopes for puppies but unfortunately in the up and down world of dog breeding it doesn't always go to plan - fingers crossed for next time. Good luck to all those showing and we hope those of you going to spectate have a very enjoyable day.

22/01/2008

It was a promising start to the show season at the weekend, at the Coventry Cocker Spaniel Clubs Open Show. Tarka was placed 3rd in the Minor Puppy Dog class and Tinker was 4th in the Minor Puppy Bitch class. Both pups really enjoyed the day, their tails didn't stop, such out-going happy pups I was very proud of them.....thank you to those that took the time to compliment them, I hope to have some up to date photos of the dynamic duo soon.
